Five Ways to make Money If You’re Out Of Work Due to Injury

So you’ve been involved in an accident and you can’t work until you are healed. How do you make money in the meantime? This is a very common dilemma many of our clients face, and something that we are asked about often. While workers’ compensation and disability can help to lighten the blow of not being able to collect a paycheck, you may have additional expenses you need to take care of that those programs don’t cover.

Below are five ways that you can make additional money while you are out of work due to an injury.

Online Selling

If you’re like most people, you probably have a lot of personal belongings that you don’t need anymore and have been wanting to get rid of for a long time. Why not take this time to get organized, decide what you want and don’t want, and sell everything that can be sold? There are numerous avenues available to you to sell valuables online, including eBay, Amazon, and Craigslist.

Rent a Room (or Your Whole House)

Although you might not be completely comfortable allowing strangers into your home on a short- or even long-term basis, extra rooms can mean big money. If you are not convalescing at home—for example, if you are staying with someone else—you could even rent out your entire house. One of the best ways to rent out unused space is Airbnb, a service that allows you to rent rooms or houses to travelers for as little as a day or as long as a few weeks. If you’re looking for something more long-term, you can try listing your room on popular real estate services like Craigslist or Zillow.

Become a Freelancer

Do you have any talents? Do you have a skill that is marketable? If so, there is probably somebody out there who is willing to pay for your services. Sites like Fiverr and Upwork are good platforms where freelancers of all varieties can offer their skills to willing buyers.

Get Websites to Pay You

If you’re handy with a computer, you can leverage it to make money in your spare time. There are several websites out there that will pay you to do various tasks. For example, you could try CrowdSource for small writing jobs, Liveops for phone answering services, or Project Payday, which will pay you to give testimonials.

Drive for Uber or Lyft

In addition to your house and your computer, you can also leverage your car to make extra money while you are injured. As long as your injury does not prevent you from being able to sit and operate a vehicle, Uber and Lyft can be very attractive options. One of the best parts about driving for Uber and Lyft is that you can set your own schedule, so you only drive when you feel up to the task.
